When the reply came, I knew that he accepted my challenge and is coming out to fight - I was going to battle the single strongest being that there is. Quiet a pity that it turned out to be evil, but it was what it was and after multiple defeats I, a leader with no army, was going to take him on one on one. I thought about the ending of the fight, whether my plan will work and she will, indeed, come to my side, bringing the power needed to turn the tide. I then turned my mind to the day when the plan started to form - when some old hag told me that I will stand up to the enemy by myself and the only weapon that can deliver the final blow I can not wield. She said that the outcome is unknown to her, though she saw me being carried away by eagles - dead or alive, she couldn't say. Many wise men gave me advice, and I discovered that the fall of the enemy will be brought around by a team of two, and that there are no other creature alive that will stand up to the enemy along my side. Thus I was put on a search for the one who will. When the possible person was found, I transported my spirit in space and time, leaving my life, my people for some two decades in an attempt to change the fate of the world and to make myself last through the most desperate battle. I arrived a year before she was born, to be born myself and to learn the ways of their lives before I make contact. It can't be easy to explain to someone that they need to abandon everything they have and to travel to a place that is no more to fight the long defeated enemy and to save the long gone race.
Being a child all over was not an easy task. Memories of my past soon withered away and I started getting used to the new life. I would have never thought that these people, who were so reminiscent of a lesser race in my birthworld, could get along with no power of creation at all. But I had to forget all I was used you and move my trust from the air and stars to metal and fire. Years passed and I became a nearly normal member of their society. While standing out in some aspects, I nevertheless fitted in and was widely believed to be like them. As I was coming of age, my past made itself known. I started picking up the skills I used to have, started reading their works that the most reminded of my real self. The tricks of the trade that I used to be matchless in came with a difficulty, though still easier than to most others. Once, an item of mine came to the new me and with it, the memories stated drifting in. A small silver trinket, containing a sentient and potent spirit inside that was able to come out in physical form on will, was the first possession that connected my two once disjoined lives. In a few years I found her, and the work began. While I knew that she was physically fit to fight and win, she had to be trained; while she was mentally ready to move to a life such as mine, she had to be taught the language and the customs to prepare her for a new life; and most importantly, she had to be introduced to the fact that she will have to travel to whole new life to battle the strongest possible foe. The days rolled on, but I was in no hurry - how little did I know.
She had to leave once. It was a normal leave and she was going to be back soon. Both of us traveled much and we weren't that close to expect each other to be near at all times anyway. When I was saying my goodbyes, I decided to give her a silver ring - that very trinket with a spirit inside. It was shaped after a wolf, so when she jokingly asked me what does it do, I replied that it can summon a wolf to aid her at any moment; she took it with a laugh. I waved her away; I waited at the window seeing her plane take off. Did I then know that I will not see her again? Soon, some news, a present and a surprise were waiting for me. My close associate found a way to transport items to me and that I was surprised at. I received a letter from him saying that the tidings are bad and I am urgently needed back. The present was an old possession of mine - an elegant sword with a living soul embedded into the blade. It was a sister sword of the one I wore to battle, equally powerful, but able to talk and even act on its own when permitted. The plans had to change. I talked to the sword about the new plan, made all the preparations and departed to where I belonged. The day that I came back among my people, her ring howled and glowed with dim red. When she touched it, a giant red wolf ran out and away - it ran to a nearby hill where it howled away, scaring all who heard. I talked to it then over the airs and told what its new mission was. Silently it came back, looked at her with sad eyes and hid back into the ring. That was the last time I heard anything from the world in which my only hope now resided.
She was going to return soon and expected to see me upon the return. Instead, there was a random limousine driver with her name on a sign. He was instructed to tell her that he was hired to drive her home and to give her a letter, a box and a newspaper. The newspaper would have my picture on the front page with a caption - "Teenager killed while driving home. The motives and the executors of the murder are yet to be found". The box would have the sword lying in it with a note - "Don't touch it yet - read the letter first". When she would open the letter, it will say that although she heard of my death and she will yet see my grave, we can still meet if she chooses for it to be so. The sword, the letter would continue, has a hidden feature in it that she will have to discover and that with enough dedication she can master it, gaining skills far beyond just sword fighting. When she would spend more time with the sword, she will once turn a ring on the handle, right next to the blade, and in doing so she will allow the spirit to talk to her. The spirit would begin teaching with the language, then continuing onto fighting and other disciplines. The spirit in the ring would assist with the process, taking forms of various foes to practice her fighting skills. She would learn swiftly and soon the sword spirit would teach her higher arts, most useful of which for her will be the skill to travel to my world. When she would be ready, the spirits would inquire on the happenings in my world and finding the right moment, would lead her here. Despite my sudden departure, it can all end well. If only everything goes the way it is planned…
I watched him come out, watched him walk towards me - the terrifying huge shape that makes you think that a tower is marching against you. He was confident of the outcome and smiled maliciously. I wondered then, where she was. How was the training coming along, why have I not heard a word from them. The spirits would know what is happening right now, they would check here regularly and would know that it is now or never. Could she come flying in at the last moment? They would know - I know they would. He stopped a little ahead of me and prepared for an attack. Must have been quiet a picture - an immense dark giant next to a short, barely knee-high, but shining brightly figure. I saw the eagles circling above, they too knew what was happening and knew that they would carry me away, whatever the outcome. Where will the eagles take me, I thought. To the mountains, where my mound will be or to a place of life where I can yet live? I raised up my shield and took the stance. As he charged, a new star gleamed on the horizon.
