The Big Lebowski -
The Big Lebowski|
Yes, I finally watched it. Enough people told me that it was the best movie ever, so I downloaded it, watched it, and thought that it was overrated. What is the big hype over the movie? Yes, there is a story. Yes, the story is moderately funny (not hilarious, just moderately). Yes, the acting is good. Yes, it has some nice lines in it, but nothing I'd put into my quote book. I even looked online to see what got the people so excited and couldn't get it. I re-read the "best quotes" and reconfirmed that there isn't anything I'd put into my quote book.
It seems like that film is a memorial to all the people who live their lives like Jeff Lebowski. To complete losers who can't even make money in the one thing that they are good at. To people for whom The Dude becomes the role model. WHY???
The story, I must note, as good (?) as it may be, is as old as stories are. One moron, one million dollars and a crowd of even stupider hooligans. The story was better told when the main character was Percival of the Round Table, or his Russian equivalent Ivan the Fool. Among the children's classics we have Tolkien's "Farmer Giles of Ham". And this list could go on forever. I really don't see why does The Big Lebowski stand out.
Please explain this to me. I want to be proven wrong. :)
I think it's one of those mood movies... If they hit the right spot at the right moment - that's it. I guess it's more or less what happened to me. I was really amused when I watched it for the first time (although I wouldn't call it the best movie ever and I had no illusions about the greatness of the plot either). It's what they say, how they say it, the combination of his laid-back attitude with stressful circumstances. I don't know, I suppose I've failed in changing your mind about it, because I haven't said anything in its defence, but as far as I'm concerned it's a good enough comedy, period.

Да и к тому-же юморок типа "You want a toe?", "It doesn't matter to Jesus!" или "These guys are a bunch of fucking amateurs" мягко сказать, не мой юмор. :)

As for the role model thing, I tend to agree with you on the whole... It's a convenient type of hero for non-achievers (who would've thought they even needed a hero!).
